WLA is proud to announce that the
Waterbury Fire Stations project was selected by the Associated General
Contractors of Vermont to receive a 2011 Best Builders Award for Outstanding
Quality of Work and Effort in the Building, New Construction category.
WLA was hired in 2010 to provide
Design/Build services to build two new energy-efficient fire stations to
replace existing fire stations in the Town and Village of Waterbury,
Vermont. The Main Street Station is located in a FEMA flood plain.
WLA designed and DEW built a structure that could stand up to the 100 year
flood level – and just two weeks after the formal ribbon cutting, it was
tested by Tropical Storm Irene. The flooding in Waterbury crested 2 ˝ feet
above the 100 year flood level. Remarkably the station fared quite well,
suffering only a very small amount of water damage. No materials had to
be removed or replaced and the building was up and running the same day.
All in all, a success for flood design and construction.
